Margaret "Meg" Bolan

Meg Bolan is a rising second-year medical student at UMass Chan, the daughter of Betsy and Chris Bolan, and the youngest of four siblings. She grew up in rural New Hampshire, where she witnessed first hand the looming barriers to accessing primary care and it's devastating consequences. Meg has been in Massachusetts for the last decade, and has established her young career here. Meg attended Wellesley College and received her BA in Women & Gender studies. In her undergraduate years, she rowed in the Head of the Charles, conducted research on the cytokinesis of yeast in the Goss Lab, and wrote an award-winning honors thesis on breastfeeding.

Meg went on to work at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston Children's Hospital in their OB-GYN and Adolescent Medicine departments, respectively, as a research coordinator. In her three years at these institutions, she contributed to studies on pre-eclampsia, pudendal nerve blocks, endometriosis, and an ACO-funded study on social determinants of health, particularly housing and food insecurity. In her free time, she volunteered at Mother's Milk Bank Northeast (a breastmilk bank), and ran the Harvard stadium every Wednesday morning with the November Project.

Now at UMass Chan, Meg's personal passion for health equity has blossomed. She contributes to research on the impact of doulas on birthing outcomes of Black parents, as well as examining a digital intervention for assessing and preventing perinatal anxiety. Recognizing early in her career our current primary care crisis, she is ambitious and driven to make a change and provide hope and interest in the field for future physicians of Massachusetts. Meg dreams of one day returning to a rural area, and practice as a family physician.
